FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Curriculum
  • Do I have to start at Level One?

Yes, everyone does. This is not a reflection of ability. In order to develop a full understanding, the levels are structured so that each piece of riding technology builds upon the previous. Level One is the start of that process.

  • I completed Level One/Two/Three __years ago, do I need to repeat?

There is no time limit on your progression through the levels. The only thing to consider is whether or not you still remember and understand the material from your previous level. If you’re vague on the information, or can’t remember all the drills and what they were about, it may be best to repeat. If you can recall all the drills, or even better have been riding regularly and applying what you learnt, you should have no problems moving on to the next level. If you’re still unsure, contact our office and they’ll help you determine what’s best.

  • Is Level One appropriate for complete beginners?

Level One is for anyone that has a licence. If you can let the clutch out without stalling (most of the time) and do the basic control actions on the bike, you’re ready for Level One. Although all riders start at Level One, where possible we try our best to put you in a group of similarly skilled riders so the difference between the fastest and slowest in the group is as small as possible.

  • Will I need knee sliders / will I get my knee down?

If getting your knee down is your goal, the safest way to go about achieving that is by having your riding fundamentals in place. In other words, understanding and applying the riding technology covered in Level One is the way to make sure it’s your knee that scrapes the ground, and not the rest of your bike. Some people get their knee down, some don’t. Some have done it a thousand times already, and some don’t want to! Whichever category you fall into, the Superbike School will get you moving forward with your riding.

Reschedules and Refunds
  • Can I cancel my booking and get a refund?

Provided it is more than 60 days out from your booked event you can cancel your booking and obtain a refund, pay a processing fee of 10,000 Yen. If it is less than 60 days to your booked event no refunds will be given. You can, however, sell your position to another rider and notify us of the rider change. This applies to any equipment hired for your event.

  • Can I transfer my booking to another date?

Provided it is more than 30 days out from your booked event you can transfer your booking to another date, for a processing fee of 10,000 Yen. If it is less than 30 days to your booked event you cannot reschedule your booking. You can, however, sell your position to another rider and notify us of the rider change. This applies to any equipment hired for your event.

Weather
  • What happens if it rains?

If it rains… we get wet! The drills are just as applicable in the wet as they are in the dry and whatever weather we get on the day is the weather you learn to apply the skills in. We ride, rain or shine.

Gear Requirements
  • Can I hire leathers/riding gear?

Yes, MEGA Workshop can look after all you gear requirements for the day. Please see Hire Bikes and Gear for full details.

  • Do I need full leathers?

Yes, you need leather pants and a leather jacket that zip together as a minimum. You will also need a full-face helmet, leather motorcycle gloves and calf-length or higher leather motorcycle boots. If you don’t have your own leathers or other riding gear you can hire them – see Hire Bikes and Gear for more information.

Motorcycle Requirements
  • Do I need special tyres on my bike or will standard road tyres do?

As we will expect you to ride at 80% or less (so you have enough attention to learn and apply new techniques), standard road tyres are fine as long as they pass our safety check. To see the list of items we check over visit Student Requirements.

  • Do I nedd to remove or tape my mirrors?

Yes, you will be required to at least tape your mirrors; you can remove them if you choose. Don’t worry if you’re not able to do the taping yourself, we’ll do that for you at scrutineering.

  • I don’t have a motorcycle, can I still participate?

You betcha. Thanks to MEGA Workshop even those who are currently without wheels can participate in Superbike School. MEGA Workshop have a fleet of BMW S 1000 RR, all racetrack prepared, for hire at each of our events. Please see Hire Bikes and Gear for more information.

  • I don’t have a sport bike, can I still participate?

Of course! Don’t let the name fool you – the skills taught at Superbike School are applicable to any motorcycle, be it sports bike, tourer, cruiser, naked bike, motard… So don’t be shy. So long as what you’re wanting is to learn the art of cornering, regardless of your bike type, you’re in the right place.

Fuel
  • How much fuel will I need?

The amount of fuel you use is dependent on the way you ride. As a minimum you should arrive at the track with a full tank. If possible you can bring a jerry can of extra fuel to be on the safe side.

Event Schedule
  • What time do I have to be at the track?

It is imperative you arrive at the circuit by 7.00am sharp – the running of the school day depends on it! Plus, if you turn up late you risk forfeiting your spot for the day.

Accommodation
  • Is there somewhere close to the track where I can stay?

Surely is. For Phillip Island we recommend The Waves Apartments which is located in Cowes, approximately ten minutes from the circuit. For Sydney Motorsports Park (Eastern Creek) we recommend The Alpha, directly across from the circuit.

License Requirements
  • Do I need motorcycle license to participate?

Yes, each circuit has a minimum licence requirement:

    • Sydney Motorsports Park: Provisional Licence (issued by the road transport authority within your state/country) or a Competition Licence (issued by Motorcycling Australia).

    • Phillip Island Circuit: Provisional Licence (issued by the road transport authority within your state/country). Please note: Phillip Island Circuit does not accept Learner’s Permits or Competition Licences.

At each circuit riders must hold the appropriate licence for the bike they will be riding.
